Meetings This Week:

Tuesday Group - Tuesday 17th Oct - 9:30 am - 12 noon

We will have a look at our Windows 10 installation. We left it at the end of the Communications SIG last Friday by saying "Install and Shutdown".

These updates will probably be waiting to finish when we re-boot with the message: "Preparing To Configure Windows. Please Do Not Turn Off Your Computer".

I'm not sure if anyone has installed programs like the Glary Utilities, but they are excellent for checking how up-to-date our user-installed software is.

At the recent "resetting" of our Windows 10, where we lost all of our own installed software, many former programs are still missing.

For example, the simple little program, Wizmouse needs re-installation. It notes where the mouse is hovering and scrolls that window when we use the mouse wheel. Otherwise you have to risk clicking inside the window before the scrolling works. How many times have you clicked and gone hurtling down the wrong path? Many, I'll bet.

[ Ed: Thanks to Tim Kelly for this gem. ]

Family History - Tuesday 17th Oct - 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

We will be exploring the early history of Northwood, a Sydney suburb in the Lane Cove Municipality. The two main pioneer families were the Pendray and Davy families. Other families will also be covered. Come along and find out more next Tuesday.

Remember, December 2017 will be my final presentation in this series.

Web Design - Saturday 21st Oct - 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

You may have noticed the call to arms for volunteers in the newssheet. As a SIG Leader I would indorse the idea. To paraphrase that ad “If you know something, say something”. It will get very boring if you solely rely on your SIG Leader to provide all the content. The Penrith Group has long used that idea to find great topics to discuss.

The Web Design SIG has taken the volunteer challenge and this month Bob has stepped up to show us the new grid structure.

This is a new method of layout for web pages creating a layout of columns and rows. Unlike the old method of using tables, grid looks like giving real advantages to layout and being a real boon to responsive layouts. So, this month we can see how it all works.

If you would like an idea of what it's all about here's a link to Rachel Andrew's “Getting started with Grid”. Rachel is the “guru” of grid layout.

Steve South

Web Design Leader

We will talk about web-page Grid definitions in CSS and show that it's more flexible than Flex. Grid is two-dimensional, so entries can wrap around better underneath previous rows and columns (leaving empty slots if necessary on the last row). This gives a responsive table-like look to the page.

Flex entries, on the other hand, are one-dimensional. On the last row, they divide the entire width into however many entries are left, and so lose the strict column and row look.

Here are some good YouTube videos to introduce the features of Grid:

  1. Short Grid Intro (2:57)
  2. Intro to CSS Grids (16:13)
  3. Grid Autoplacement (4:57)

ASCCA News:

ASCCA Conference (Nov 8, 9) and AGM Agenda

ASCCA Conference

Greetings all,

Please find attached the agenda for the Annual General Meeting which is held at the end of day 1 of the Conference and a flyer for the Conference.

[ Ed: Unfortunately, the agenda for the actual Conference is not yet available. ]

By the way, do you know/have a spare treasurer? ASCCA is looking for one!

Please make sure that all of your members know about the Conference. Very often club members don't realise that the Conference is designed for them! We are so grateful for the sponsorship we have managed to organise which has allowed us to charge a very low registration fee.

We also congratulate the clubs that pay the registration fee for their trainers to attend. We know that all clubs can't afford to do that but what an excellent investment in helping their trainers to keep up to date, and to acknowledge their hours of volunteer service they give to your club and its members!

The new Be Connected program is leaving a lot of clubs wondering so it will be worth your while to hear speakers on the topic and be able to ask questions at the Information Stand that Be Connected will have on each day of the Conference.

I wonder which club will have the highest number of members attending. Will it be your club that wins the honour!?!

Stop Press: NBN Co and Samsung are the last two speakers added to the program. Have you been watching the Conference Website for updates? Go to the ASCCA Website and click on the link to the Conference to find lots of details including online registration.

I do hope I will see you at the Conference,

Fond regards,

Nan
