Dear Members

Meetings This Week:

Main Meeting - Tuesday Apr 24th - 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Before I introduce our special guest this month, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to read this email!

We will have a brief EGM (extraordinary general meeting) to propose Life Membership status for Robert Israel, and we have a proposal from member John Lee to rename the group the "Sydney Technology User Group."

I remember making this same suggestion when we first decided to consider changing our name, and at the time, we had decided to honour our heritage as a PC user group, and to have continuity with the fact that our domain name is SydneyPC.com.

The acronym would be STUG rather than SPCTUG. If we were the Sydney Technology User Futuristic Fans, we could have an acronym that was STUFF, but perhaps that is taking things too far. :-) :-)

In any case, whether we proceed with Sydney Technology User Group or just keep things as they are, you can always tell your friends that we are a Technology user group, which encompasses everything anyway.

So, who is our special guest this month?

Our special guest is Renato Catalan, Principal of The Gap Agency, representing AMD, Blue Microphones, Brother and Seagate. Renato last presented to us in October of 2011, so it will be great to have him present to us again!

Renato will deliver four 10 minute segments giving us an update on the latest and greatest from each of these companies.

AMD has unleashed a new range of Ryzen processors that offer fantastic value for money while incredibly delivering more power than their Intel counterparts. Renato will tell us about how AMD achieved stunning sales success last year, forcing Intel to react, and will give us a sneak peek on the next-gen Ryzen processors coming this year, and will urge you to seriously consider a very wallet-friendly yet still impressively powerful AMD processor in your next computer.

Then there's Blue Microphones. If you're thinking of creating your own podcast, something anyone of any age can do today, then you'll need a great microphone to capture your voice with the clarity it deserves. Renato will show us models worth checking out. Blue Microphones are affordable, and can unleash the content creator in you!

After this comes Brother, which doesn't just make printers from extremely affordable entry-level prices at Officeworks for homes and businesses, but also makes quality business-class multifunction devices that can scan, print, copy and, if you still just want the fax, ma'm, can send faxes, too.

Finally, Renato will show us the latest hard drives on sale from Seagate, which are still perfect for storing large amounts of data, for backups, to store your photos and videos, and more.

There will be an internal Seagate 2.5-inch 1TB hard drive to be won on the night in the raffle, and I will be supplying a USB 3.0 2.5-inch external case from Jaycar that this drive can be put into, so for a great cross section of superior tech, you'll definitely appreciate learning about these new products!

See you Tuesday night - I'll be there until approx 6.30pm before I need to head to the airport as I take off at 10.00pm to a conference in Taiwan on the 25th to the 27th.

I will also be away in May at a conference in Nashville, but don't worry, I will ensure we have a great presenter!
